Rasam Recipe

Ingredients for making Rasam:

  •     3 medium size Tomatoes
  •     2 Shallots(Small Onion)
  •     5 cloves Garlic
  •     5 Green Chillies
  •     1 medium Lemon sized ball of Tamarind
  •     1 tsp Jaggery
  •     1 tsp Mustard seeds
  •     15 curry leaves
  •     2 Red chillies
  •     1 tsp Coriander powder
  •     1 tsp Cumin seeds powder
  •     2 tsp Pepper powder (Freshly ground Pepper preferred)
  •     Coriander leaves for garnishing.
  •     1 tsp oil

Steps for making Rasam:

  1. Cut each Tomato into 4 pieces.
  2. Slice Shallots into small pieces.
  3. Crush the Garlic.
  4. Slit Green Chillies in the middle.
  5. Extract the pulp of Tamarind by soaking it in a cup of hot water.
  6. Boil the tomatoes, Green Chillies and Garlic in 4 cups of water in a Vessel.
  7. Add Cumin seeds powder, Pepper powder, Coriander powder, Jaggery and Tamarind pulp into the vessel and simmer for 15 minutes.
  8. Heat the Oil in a small frying pan.
  9. Splutter the Mustard seeds in the Frying Pan.
  10. Add the Curry leaves, Red Chilli(slit in the middle), Asafoetida powder and Shallots.
  11. Fry this for a minute.
  12. Pour the contents of the frying pan into the Rasam Vessel.
  13. Garnish Rasam using Coriander leaves.
  14. Serve Rasam hot.
